Hair Loss on a Baby? Is it Normal?

When a baby is born with a head full of hair, parents absurdly happy. But a few months later, the pride turned into panic. Strands for the sake of your baby's delicate hair strands falling, falling. What happened?

Not Permanent Hair
Moms, no need to worry, it normally happens. Babies do tend to lose their hair early in life. Keep in mind, the hair is divided broadly into two types, namely:

- Lanugo Hair. Fine hair, thin, slightly-containing pigments and there particular in infants.

- Terminal Hair. The hair is more coarse and contains a lot of pigment, is a permanent hair.

At the time of the newborn, the hair is growing lanugo hair and sometimes a little blond color.

"This is not permanent hair, within 4 months of life of the hair will fall out gradually or may be at once," said Dr. Tina Ward Wisesa, SpKK (K) of Sakti Medical Clinic, Tevet, Jakarta. Further, she said that the location of hair loss can be in the forehead, top of the head or back of the head. This loss process is a normal process and will be experienced by all babies, even the baby's head may be bald. But when the baby was 4 months old, mothers need not worry. Hair loss will then be replaced with a permanent terminal hair.

Causes of Hair Loss
Just as in adults, infants also experience hair growth period and rest. In the case of newborns, all hair follicles enter a period of rest at the same time. In addition to the above factors, there are certain conditions that can trigger and cause hair loss in newborns, namely:

- Sleeping Position
Sleeping in the same position for several hours at a time can also be one cause of infant hair loss. Try to observe! If he always slept on her back with the back of the head on the pillow, or frequently rubbing his head into the mattress, there can be hair loss, even bald in the back of the head area. To prevent this, use a pillow in a baby with a horseshoe shape. Or, change the baby's sleeping position after some time.

- Stress, fever and hormonal changes
Ranges from 5 to 15 percent of hair on the scalp will usually experience a resting phase at any one time. But stress, fever or hormonal changes can cause large amounts of hair stops growing at the same time. Dates in the baby's hair generally begins when entering the stage of growth which ranges from age three months.

- Malnutrition
Vitamin H or Biotin is one of the vitamin B complex which helps the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose to fuel the body. Zinc, an essential mineral, which is involved in various aspects of cellular metabolism. It also supports the growth and development of baby's hair during pregnancy, childhood and adolescence.

- Problems Endocrine
In some children, the causes of hair loss is caused by hypothyroidism. A condition where the thyroid gland is underactive and the low amount of thyroid hormone to meet metabolic needs.

Care
No special care to minimize the baby's hair loss, especially if it is a normal process of hair loss. Simply wash your baby's hair once a day using baby shampoo and dry well. Should be given "hair lotion" when the baby's skin healthy. Can also massage the baby's head with oil. Although not able to prevent hair loss, but massage can help blood circulation in the skin of the baby's head.

- Shaved, More Hair Thick?
Since the fall, parents often shave their babies, it is okay. But that does not guarantee that the hair grow thicker or less kerontokannya. "Defoliate the baby's hair no problem. Because the process of hair growth will continue as normal and eventually the hair will grow like a normal baby, "explained Dr. Tina. At least, when the baby's head is bald, no hair loss.

- Scalp Disorders
Indeed, it needs to be considered is the age when the baby is over 6 months but the hair does not grow evenly or bald. It is possible there are abnormalities in the baby's scalp (eg eczema, fungal or other reasons). When that happens, immediately consult with an expert.
